The Indian, a.k.a. the Greater One-Horned Rhino, or Nepalese Rhino numbers approximately 2,949 today, due to conservation efforts. Earlier in the 20th century, less than 200 Indian Rhinos were remaining. Strict protection efforts by Indian and Nepalese wildlife authorities have been instrumental in the recovery of the Indian Rhino. Unfortunately, poaching has increased in recent years due to political instability in Nepal, causing the rhino population to decrease by 31% since 2000.
The guards, joined by dozens of villagers, were chasing the injured rhino in the Jagdamba Tea Estate near the Kuthori forest in Assam state in an attempt to tranquilize and treat it. The attacks on the one-horned rhinoceroses have sparked outrage in the state, home to the world's largest concentration of the rhinos. The region is about 250 kilometers (155 miles) east of Gauhati, the state capital.

Much of the 480-square kilometer (185-square mile) Kaziranga National Park also was flooded, drowning two rhinos and at least a dozen other animals, said Suresh Chand, Assam's chief wildlife warden.
Rhino horn powder is coveted in some Asian countries as a medicine or an aphrodisiac and its popularity has led to a rise in rhino poaching. An estimated 2,500 out of the world's 3,000 one-horned rhinos live in Kaziranga.

Extra-large Pampers alert! On Aug. 16, the Fort Worth Zoo welcomed its newest resident, a femalegreater one-horned rhinoceros. The birth, a major triumph for the endangered species, is the first at the FW Zoo and the first ever in Texas. Both mommy and calf are doing well and can be seen in the zoo’s Asian Falls area. Personally, I’m enchanted with the little girl’s ears. So perky.

Size of the Indian Rhino

Baby Rhino (Greater One-Horned)
The Indian Rhino, along with the roughly equal-sized White Rhino, is the largest species of land mammal after the elephant.
The Indian Rhino's weight ranges from 4,000 - 6,000 pounds, and stands from 5.75 - 6.5 feet high at the shoulder. End-to-end, the Indian Rhino can be 10 - 12.5 feet in length.

Activity

The Indian Rhino is both fast and agile, running up to 25 mph for short distances and able to make sharp turns when necessary.
Indian Rhinos are designed for life near water, such as subtropical areas near floodplains and rivers, as they may spend 60% of their day in the water.
